Beaches

With the fantastic beaches of both Ceredigion and Pembrokshire within easy reach of the Fisherman’s Cottage, there’s plenty of options to choose from for a day by the sea!

Ceredigion:

Most of Ceredigion’s beaches are dog friendly and have sections where dogs are permitted on the beach.  There are two National Trust beaches which don’t allow dogs on them at all for part of the year.

Tresaith: The pretty little resort of Tresaith sits in a sheltered bay between Aberporth and Penbryn. The name comes from the River Saith which cascades down the cliffs and on to the sandy beach below. Apparently the little waterfall was created by a glacier blocking the course of the River Saith many millennia ago. Tresaith beach is a great spot for families and the Blue Flag award reflects the range of facilities on offer. These include a shop, cafe, the Ship Inn pub and public toilets - all within a stone’s throw of the beach. There are also plenty of rock pools to explore at either end of the beach.

Penbryn: Penbryn Beach is one of Ceredigion’s favourite beaches and is managed and owned by the National Trust. It is located between the scenic coves of Tresaith and Llangrannog which sit along the Wales Coast Path. Over the years it has won several awards for its cleanliness and natural beauty The beach itself is made up of soft, powdery sands that stretch for about a mile and it is generally sheltered from the wind here as the area is surrounded by sloping woodlands that protect it. As a result the beach is popular with families and you can make sandcastles or sunbathe here. The gentle slope of the beach also means that this is a good spot for swimming although there is no lifeguard service. Postcode SA44 6QL

Mwnt: The lovely little beach of Mwnt consists of a rectangle of sand backed by steep cliffs and overlooked by the dome-shaped headland of Foel y Mwnt. Owned by the National Trust, this beach is a little off the beaten track but despite this Mwnt is still a popular family beach. Much of Mwnt beach’s attraction lies in its unspoilt natural beauty. With fine golden sand, turquoise sea and barely a sign of development this is a special place. One of the few buildings near the beach is the diminutive 14th century Church of the Holy Cross (Eglwys y Grog). This little whitewashed chapel was built for passing sailors and pilgrims who frequented the area in medieval times.

Aberporth: Aberporth is known for being a charming little village on the coast of Ceredigion and Aberporth Beach is one of the prettiest in the area. Aberporth Beach is something of a misnomer as it is actually two separate beaches bisected by a headland with Dyffryn Beach to the west and Dolwen Beach to the east. Still, Aberporth Beach is often used to describe both of these beaches together. The beach has a gentle slope into the water and is made up of sand rather than shingle which means this is a great place for a swim and other favourite seaside activities. For this reason, it is popular with families and is one of the top holiday destinations in Ceredigion. At low tide there are a number of rock pools here where you can look for marine life, and you can enjoy the vast swathe of sand where you can build sandcastles or sunbathe. From Aberporth Beach you can take a picturesque clifftop walk to neighbouring Tresaith. One of the highlights of this walk is the chance to take in the sea views and if you are lucky you may even spot one of the bottlenose dolphin found in Cardigan Bay.

Llangrannog: Llangrannog would have started life as a rural village attached to a port, but nowadays the beach here is the main draw and one of the best loved in Ceredigion. The beach here sits below a series of craggy cliffs and on what is part of the scenic Wales Coast Path. Llangrannog beach is a family friendly stretch of sand which has lifeguards over the summer months. As well as being ideal for all the usual beach activities and bathing, The Beach is popular for watersports including surfing. You can also go sailing here and due to the fresh winds in the area and the slipway. Postcode SA44 6SN
